Shells is an installation that addresses the impact of the petroleum industry on the Caribbean island of Curaçao. The work features a modified claw machine containing seventy numbered terracotta Saint James scallops. The clay used for these shells integrates sand and soil from various locations on the island. An accompanying historiographic soundscape presents an auditory narrative, composed of field recordings, archival material, samples, and original music.
